Career opportunities for Internal Research Fellow (PostDoc) in Advanced EO for Earth System and Climate Science

An internal research fellow opportunity is currently open in the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes, ESRIN, Frascati, Italy.
As the holder of this two-year post, you will report to the Head of the Science Section in the Green Solutions Division within the Climate Action, Sustainability and Science Department of the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. In the execution of your tasks, you will work in close cooperation with other staff in the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes.
The Science Section is a dynamic R&D team leading Earth observation (EO) research and Earth system and climate science activities in partnership with European and international scientific groups. The applicant should indicate the preferred theme in the proposal with one of the following thematic priorities:
- Advanced SAR methods and techniques: advancing the development of novel retrieval techniques, algorithms and applications for SAR based on multifrequency and polarimetric observations, with a particular focus on the fresh potential offered by new missions such as Biomass and NISAR and the upcoming ROSE-L mission;
- Hydrology and water cycle research: advancing the use of EO for hydrology and water cycle research from global to basin scale with a particular focus on exploring and exploiting the novel capacity offered by existing and upcoming Sentinel missions. Priorities include novel high-resolution products, relating for example to precipitation, evaporation and soil moisture, hydrological modelling and water discharge, groundwater storage and MGGM, global water cycle analysis, hydro-climatic extremes and human impacts on the water cycle;
- Terrestrial carbon cycle: enhancing our capacity to observe, quantify and understand the terrestrial carbon cycle, its sensitivity to climate change and its interactions with human activities and land use in terms of agriculture, forestry, energy and water consumption for example. The activities will, in particular, focus on the synergistic use of novel capabilities, such as Copernicus Sentinels, FLEX, Biomass and novel national and international missions. You will also contribute to the coordination and implementation of ESA carbon science clusters: carbonscienceclusters.esa.int;
- Polar science and cryospheric research: with a focus on advancing our EO-based capacity to observe, understand and predict the onset and amplitude of changes in polar regions and the associated processes and potential impacts in terms of ice sheets, glaciers and icecap dynamics, ice shelf-ocean-atmosphere interactions, snow processes and surface mass balance, permafrost, sea ice and polar ocean studies. You will also contribute to the coordination and implementation of the activities of the ESA Polar science cluster: polarsciencecluster.esa.int;
- Atmospheric research: advancing EO-based atmospheric satellite observations and their use in atmospheric research and Earth system science. Particular attention will be paid to existing and new missions, such as EarthCARE, and upcoming missions such as CO2M. Priorities include CO2, CH4 and other greenhouse gases, aerosols and cloud interactions, high-resolution air quality and preparation of future missions, such as CO2M, Sentinel-4, Sentinel-5 and FORUM. You will also contribute to the coordination and implementation of the activities of the ESA Atmosphere science cluster: atmospheresciencecluster.esa.int.
