Biography
Dr Silvano is an oceanographer with expertise in polar regions. Dr Silvano uses observations and models to understand the role of ocean in driving melting of ice sheets and in controlling the rate of global warming.
Research
I study the Southern Ocean and how it interacts with the climate system and the Antarctic Ice Sheet. At ESA I have been working on understanding recent changes in Antarctic sea ice and how they are related to ocean processes. Using new a satellite-derived product of sea surface salinity as well model and in situ data, I aim to understand the drivers and consequences of the recent decline in Antarctic sea ice.
