The ESA Science Hub is actively participating in the WCRP Global Kilometer-Scale Hackathon 2025, a pioneering global event focused on advancing high-resolution Earth system modeling. Scheduled from 12 to 16 May 2025, the hackathon brings together scientists, coders, and climate experts to collaboratively analyze “Storm Resolving Models” with resolutions finer than 5 km.
Organized by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) under its Digital Earths Lighthouse Activity, the hackathon aims to:
- Promote global collaboration by sharing best practices in process-based analysis of kilometer-scale simulations.
- Enhance accessibility to high-quality data resources, supported by designated ambassadors facilitating international collaboration.
- Expand long-term access by applying lessons learned to support a more connected data-sharing environment.
The event is hosted across multiple global nodes, including locations in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia. Each node focuses on region-specific scientific challenges, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
The Science Hub team is participating in the hackathon with a focus on the utilisation of the observations coming from the new Earth Explorer mission EarthCARE.

ESA’s EarthCARE (Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer) mission launched on 28 May 2024 is the largest and most complex Earth Explorer to date. The mission is a joint venture between ESA and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and will advance our understanding of the role that clouds and aerosols play in reflecting incident solar radiation back into space and trapping infrared radiation emitted from Earth’s surface.
